What is the role of the UPSC in the appointment of civil servants?
The UPSC plays a pivotal role in the appointment of civil servants in various services and cadres. Its primary responsibilities include conducting examinations, interviews, and making recommendations for appointments to the civil services of the Government of India. The UPSC conducts the UPSC examination, which includes the Preliminary examination, Main examination, and Personality Test (interview). Based on the performance of the candidates, the UPSC prepares a merit list and recommends qualified candidates for appointment to the different civil services, such as the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and other Group A and Group B services. The UPSC also ensures that the appointment process follows the principles of transparency, fairness, and meritocracy.
