It is found at the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz, on the Gulf of Oman, in the province of Sistan-Baluchistan, Iran. The only deep-water port in Iran that has direct access to the Indian Ocean. India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan are all nearby. It is a part of the International North-South Transport Corridor, a multimodal trade route that connects Russia, Northern Europe, the Caspian Sea, the Persian Gulf, and the Indian Ocean.
India, Iran, and Afghanistan signed a tripartite agreement in 2016 to build a terminal in the port and create an international transportation corridor. It offers a substitute trading route for the China’s Silk route.
