The Sarhul celebration is how Adivasis in Jharkhand and the surrounding Chhotanagpur area greet the new year and the arrival of spring. On the second day of the three-day celebration, the primary ceremonies take place at Sarna Sthals. Throughout Chhotanagpur, which encompasses Jharkhand, portions of Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Bihar, these communally protected sacred groves can be found close to communities. Several tribes, including the Oraon, Munda, Santal, Khadia, and Ho, have observed Sarhul, each with their own names and customs. Sarhul accompanied tribes like the Munda, Oraon, and Santal as they were sent as indentured laborers to distant locations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The festival is now observed in a variety of places, including Assamese tea gardens, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Bhutan.
