It is a Hindu Temple Festival, celebrated at Vadakkunnathan Temple, Thrissur, Kerala. It is celebrated in the month of Medam (April-May) of the Malayalam calendar, on the Pooram asterism day. It is organized by two groups of temples-Paramekkavu and Thiruvambady Devaswoms.

It is founded by Sakthan Thampuran, the Maharaja of Cochin, in the late 18th century. Before Thrissur Pooram, the largest festival was the Arattupuzha Pooram.

However, many temples were denied entry one year due to delay, prompting Sakthan Thampuran to create a new centralized Pooram at Vadakkunnathan Temple.

It is open to all regardless of caste, religion or social status. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Events such as flag hoisting, display of fireworks, elephant processions, panchavadyam takes place.

It is known as ‘Mother of all Poorams’. It attracts hundreds of thousands of people, including foreign tourists. It is famous for its grandeur, discipline, and musical excellence.
