Delivery of the first of 99 F404-IN20 engines for the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft Mark-1A fighter jet to Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. was announced by engine maker General Electric Aerospace, signalling the start of deliveries for the postponed program.

According to the IAF Chief, HAL has committed to producing 24 Tejas Mark-1A jets the following year, and the IAF needs to add 35–40 fighter jets annually to make up for the gap. This year, 12 F-404 engines for the LCA-Mk1A would be delivered to the IAF.

Model Question:

Discuss the significance of the indigenously developed Tejas LCA-Mk1A for India’s defence sector. How does it contribute to self-reliance in defence production under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative? (250 words)

Model Answer

Tejas LCA-Mk1A (Light Combat Aircraft) is a 4.5-generation multi-role fighter aircraft developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). It represents a major milestone in India’s pursuit of self-reliance in defence technology under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Significance for India’s Defence Sector:

  1. Indigenization and Technological Advancement: Tejas Mk1A is equipped with advanced avionics, Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, and Electronic Warfare (EW) capabilities. Over 50% indigenization ensures reduced reliance on foreign suppliers.
  2. Strategic Autonomy: Indigenous development strengthens India’s strategic autonomy by reducing dependency on foreign defence imports.
  3. Cost-Effective Solution: Compared to imported fighter jets, Tejas is more affordable while maintaining high-performance capabilities.
  4. Enhancing Air Force Capabilities: The aircraft supports both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, providing operational flexibility to the Indian Air Force (IAF). It complements the aging fleet of MiG-21 fighters.
  5. Boost to Domestic Industry: The program involves collaboration with Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), fostering innovation and employment.

Contribution to Atmanirbhar Bharat:

  1. Skill Development: Indigenous projects like Tejas create a skilled workforce and encourage technological expertise.

  1. Export Potential: With interest from nations like Malaysia and Argentina, Tejas boosts India’s defence exports.
  2. R&D Growth: Encourages research in aerospace engineering, furthering indigenous defence capabilities.

Tejas LCA-Mk1A exemplifies India’s progress in indigenous defence production. Its development not only strengthens national security but also enhances technological self-sufficiency. Continued investments in projects like Tejas are crucial for achieving the goals of Atmanirbhar Bharat and positioning India as a global defence manufacturer.
