How are the final ranks determined in the UPSC examination?

The final ranks in the UPSC examination are determined based on the cumulative marks obtained in the Main examination (written) and the Personality Test (interview). The Main examination carries 1750 marks, while the Personality Test carries 275 marks, summing up to a total of 2025 marks. The marks obtained by candidates in the Main examination and the Personality Test are added together, and the ranks are allocated based on the total marks secured. The candidate with the highest total marks is ranked first, and subsequent ranks are determined accordingly. It is important to note that the Main examination marks and the Personality Test marks are considered separately, and their weightage varies. The final ranks determine the order of preference in the allocation of services and cadre based on the candidates’ choices and the availability of vacancies.
