Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme: It was launched in December 1993 by the Government of India to enable MPs to recommend development works in their constituencies with an emphasis on creating durable community assets based on locally felt needs.
To enable MPs to suggest developmental works in the areas of national priorities, such as Drinking water, Education, Health and Sanitation, Roads and Bridges, Electrification, Public libraries.
Annual Allocation per MP is 5 crore. Funds are non-lapsable and released in two installments. Implemented through district authorities, not directly by MPs.
Lok Sabha MPs can recommend works within their constituency. Rajya Sabha MPs can recommend works anywhere in the state they represent. Nominated MPs can recommend works anywhere in the country.
The District Collector/Deputy Commissioner sanctions and executes the work through implementing agencies. Social audits, RTI and Third-party evaluations are encouraged. CAG regularly audits MPLADS.
