It refers to the region of the erstwhile princely state of Jammu and Kashmir that has been under Pakistan’s control since the first Indo-Pak war in 1947-48.

It is divided into two administrative units by Pakistan:
1.Azad Jammu and Kashmir: claimed to be autonomous but controlled by Islamabad
2.Gilgit-Baltistan: directly administered by Pakistan as a de-facto province

Important rivers are Jhelum, Indus, Neelum. It is close to Siachen Glacier.

Indian Parliament passed a unanimous resolution on 22 February 1994 declaring PoK as part of Indian territory and vowed to get it back.

China-Pakistan Economic Corridor passes through Gilgit-Baltistan, part of Indian territory. India strongly opposes CPEC for violating its sovereignty.

PoK serves as a base of terrorist infrastructure and launchpad for infiltrations into Jammu and Kashmir.
