22 languages are recognized, giving them special recognition and official significance. The schedule originally listed 14 languages, but subsequent revisions have increased the number. 1967 saw the addition of Sindhi, followed by 1992 with Konkani, Manipuri, and Nepali, and 2003 with Bodo, Dogri, Maithili, and Santhali. While Article 351 encourages its advancement, Article 343 declares Hindi in Devanagiri script to be the official language of the Union.
