1. ISRO completes PMD operation of GSAT-12 satellite

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) concluded the communication satellite GSAT12’s post-mission disposal (PMD) process on March 23, 2023.

GSAT-12 is the 23rd GEO (Geosynchronous Earth Orbital) satellite to go through PMD

prior to decommissioning and it conveyed 12 broadened C band transponders was

sent off on July 15, 2011 and served for over 10 years.

It was moved to 47.96° E longitude from 83° E longitude in March 2021 following the launch of its replacement satellite, CMS-01 (Communication satellite), in 2020.

Operation to get rid of after the mission:

Because the GEO regime is one of the most populated and utilized regions, the UN and IADC’s internationally recognized space debris mitigation guidelines recommend moving an object at its end-of-life out of the GEO region.

The prescribed practice is to re-circle the item to an almost roundabout “burial ground”

circle over the GEO area so the circle wouldn’t rot once more into the GEOprotected zone affected by bother powers inside an additional 100 years.

The minimum required rise in perigee altitude for GSAT-12 was estimated to be 261 kilometers. The available fuel for GSAT-12 was more than sufficient to achieve this objective as a result of the Master Control Facility (MCF) in Hassan, Karnataka’s meticulous operations management.

To lift the orbit above the 35,786 km GEO altitude, seven maneuvers were performed. On March 16, 2023, the first action was a shorter burn to make the orbit more circular. Six more burns, each lasting about 150 seconds, followed.

The satellite entered a super-synchronous circular orbit nearly 400 km above the GEO altitude on March 19, 2023, following the seventh burn.

On March 23, 2023, the final passivation maneuver was carried out to exhaust the remaining fuel by firing the thrusters mounted in opposite directions. This cancelled the net thrust without affecting the orbit.

All rotating mechanisms, including momentum wheels, reaction wheels, and gyros, were turned off as part of electrical passivation, and the batteries were disconnected from the solar panels and discharged. In order to avoid any potential RF (Radio Frequency) interference, the transmitters were finally turned off.
