The Index of Industrial Production is compiled and published by the National Statistical Office, which is a division of the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation. It usually has a 6-week lag before being issued each month. It is a comprehensive measure of the performance of the industrial sector that includes manufacturing, electricity, and mining. The Core Industries Index is an independent index that concentrates on eight distinct industries, such as coal, crude oil, etc., that are included in IIP but are not its primary emphasis. In order to bring the IIP into line with other important economic statistics like GDP and WPI, it was updated to use 2011–12 as the base year. In order to more accurately depict the contemporary industrial structure, this base year was chosen.
